Understanding the Waste Hierarchy

The Waste Hierarchy is a recognised framework used by environmental bodies and regulators to rank waste management methods by their environmental benefit. UK organisations are expected to follow its principles as part of waste minimisation obligations.

The hierarchy consists of five stages:

1. Prevention — avoiding waste entirely (The Primary Goal)
2. Reuse — extending product life through repeat use
3. Recycling — processing used material into new products
4. Recovery — extracting energy from waste
5. Disposal — landfill or incineration as a final resort

Why Reuse Outperforms Recycling

While recycling is positive, it still involves transport, industrial processing, energy use, and water consumption. Reuse avoids much of this impact.
